Itinerary

Today’s tour will begin at 08:30. Discover one of Vietnam’s last remaining pottery villages with a half day excursion from Hanoi. Travel east to Phu Lang, a non-commercial pottery hamlet located on the banks of the Cau River.

Take a step back in time while walking through the streets of Phu Lang. The town has been producing ceramic vessels since the 13th century and very little has changed in the production methods. Almost half of the residents are involved in the pottery industry, making decorative tiles, jars and burial caskets that are sold domestically and abroad.

Visit workshops using incredible rang kilns, brick tunnel kilns that stretch up to 20 meters long. See how the craftsmen fuel the fires with wood to generate temperatures upwards of 1000 degrees Celsius. Witness skilled artisans designing vessels from raw clay found in the region. Learn how vibrant colours are created from enamels of eel skin, frog skin and other resourceful methods.

Admire the remarkable craftsmanship of these unique, handmade vessels at a local shop before returning to Hanoi at midday.
