Upon arrival at Chiang Mai airport, you will be met by your guide and transferred to your hotel.
This evening we will take you to the city’s north, to the excellent Baan Suan restaurant. The architect designed restaurant is located in a rural area, beautifully overlooking the river Ping. Enjoy the culinary delights of Northern Thailand, which are a feast for the palate as well as the eye. After this delicious dinner, you will light a paper balloon or khom loy and launch it in the cool night, following the local belief that misfortune will be floated away…

Northern Thailand is famous for the quality of its woodcarving arts. At Baan Tawai, this art has been passed down from generation to generation. At present, a wide variety of wood carving products and other decorative items such as wood-strips, gold leaf wood, antique wood, silverware, lacquer ware, hand-woven textile, basketry and earthenware, can be found here. This half day tour shows you how Baan Thawai craftsmen produce their crafts by hand from the first stage to the finished product, and give you an idea of what you can buy and take home as souvenirs from Chiang Mai. Return to the hotel to relax is at leisure.
At the late afternoon, take you to explore ancient Chiang Mai, including its old city walls, gates, moat and markets. After visiting Wat Suan Dok, where the ashes of Chiang Mai’s royal family are interred, you continue to Wat Prathat Doi Suthep, the temple on the mountain, and the most sacred in Northern Thailand. Your experienced guide will explain the story of the temple, the white elephant and lead you around its impressive chedi and show its beautiful murals. In the late afternoon, the tourist masses have already left the temple grounds and dusk will give a very special atmosphere. After your private blessing ceremony, witness the magical evening chanting of the monks.

With its mahout as your guide, you will travel at lumbering elephant pace through bamboo forest, wood- and grassland habitats, spotting the seasonal birdlife and various mammals. Eventually reach the Ruak river and the Burmese border, where you will meet your next mode of transport, a longtail boat, for a boatride to the Mekong river and Don Sao, a small island in Laos. Continue by ox-cart through rice paddies and farmland. Picnic lunch will be provided at the San Thung reservoir. Continue driving uphill on the mud road to an Akha Hilltribe village on the top of Doi Sa Ngo Mountain where you can witness the tribal life and get stunning views over the Mekong. Then visit the old kingdom of Chiang Saen on the steep banks of Mekong river, before returning to your resort.
